BOSTON, Mass.– June 30, 2008 – MITX, the Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange, announced today the results of the industry’s first-ever market sizing survey for New England’s digital marketing, media, and technology industry (DMM&T). The results show that, despite a nationally softening economy, Massachusetts’ digital ecosystem continues to thrive, contributing substantially to the local economy.

According to the research, 2,215 DMM&T companies, employing 70,000, claim New England (MA, NH, RI, ME, VT) as their home, with revenues topping out at $24B. Massachusetts leads the pack by employing 61,600 and contributing a bulk of the revenue share.

The top 10 cities by number of employees skew inside the famous Route 128 belt.  A combined 31,444 employees in the DMM&T market work in Boston, Cambridge, Waltham and Burlington. Other cities and towns rounding out the top 10 include Marlborough, Lexington, Nashua, Newton, Woburn, and Andover.

In conjunction with the market sizing research, a survey was conducted with MITX members to  aass assess attitudes and expectations within the industry. They expect staffing to grow an average of 6 percent during 2008, with revenue growth over last year expanding by 14 percent.

"MITX members tell us that a key challenge will be recruiting and retaining digital marketing and media technology talent. We're working to get the word out to graduates in the region that they can build their careers right here in the Bay State," said Kiki Mills, executive director, MITX. "Startups and more mature businesses, like those that will be featured at our fifth annual Tech Awards on June 3, offer great launching pads for new professionals to learn and contribute to one of the most exciting areas of technology development."

When asked if the current economy has affected growth prospects, 34 percent answered “not at all,” while only 5 percent of respondents felt the current economy is impacting their companies’ growth significantly. Moreover, 52% of the companies surveyed believe their digital business will increase significantly over the next three years.

“We’ve all seen the headlines – softening economy, enterprises retrenching and downsizing underway. However, the MITX constituency is bucking the trend with growth and expansion,” said Mills. “The economic impact these companies have on the local economy is much greater than people think. We always hear about Massachusetts as the hub for biotechnology; however New England’s digital business sector is leading in employment and driving innovation on a global scale.”
