"At MITX, we believe our community needs to party more” – Words of wisdom from MITX President Debi Kleiman. We thought about it (for 30 seconds) and decided that we should party more; so we’re going to! We’re buying 100 beers to start the night off right (because there’s not quite enough in our mini fridge) and we want you to help us drink them.

Join us at Dillon’s to meet some of the new faces in our industry, enjoy a beer on us, and take advantage of this rare opportunity to meet one-on-one with members of our Board of Directors, including Emily Nagle Green, Troy Kelley, Scott Savitz, and Gus Weber. And since a party isn’t a party without prizes (right?) we’ll also be giving away prizes and gifts – including gift cards to Shoebuy.com. (If you’re interested in providing a prize, please e-mail Kate Jurras.)

Soon we’ll have more information about the one-on-one meetings with our board, but in the meantime, you'd better add yourself to the waitlist, because this party will be THE place to be on March 22. I mean, who else offered to buy you beer on a Tuesday? Thought so.

<![CDATA[Fireside Chat with Joi Ito, the Director of the MIT Media Lab]]>Event Date: 12/07/2010
Time: 08:00am - 10:00am
Location:

British Consulate - 1 Broadway, Fl 7, Cambridge MA (Directions)

Event Type: MITX Event
Price: Members: $0.0000Non-members: $0.0000

Join MITX for our first event of the year: a Fireside Chat with the new Director of the MIT Media Lab, Joi Ito. Moderated by Larry Weber (Co-Founder of MITX and Chairman of W2 Group), this one-on-one conversation will reveal Joi's, and the MIT Media Lab's, view on the convergence of social, design and mobility in creating impactful innovations.

A well-known thinker, venture capitalist, and Internet entrepreneur, Joi recently took over the MIT Media Lab as its fourth Director. Joi’s vision for the Lab merges the East Coast’s long term focus with the West Coast’s agile approaches, turning the Lab into a place to “build stuff” that has long-term, powerful effects.

While the Media Lab is already known for its multidisciplinary-based research, Joi’s expertise in connecting the dots and providing context and connections will take the Lab’s research to a level never seen before. If the past 25 years of the Media Lab’s research has resulted in such products as the e-ink that powers today’s tablet readers, the first powered ankle-foot prosthesis and the One Laptop Per Child computer, imagine the impact Joi’s leadership and vision will have on the next 25 years.

Join us on January 10th to hear Joi’s view on the next wave of innovation and how his agile, long-term, multidisciplinary approach to building solutions can be applied everywhere and anywhere.

Joi Ito, Director of the MIT Media Lab

Telling Boston’s Innovation Economy Story
A MITX Up Marketing Hackathon

Boston is one of the world’s most innovative cities. Yet to date we haven’t been able to capture the story and the utter awesomeness of our innovation economy in a way that’s succinct, compelling and exciting.

We’d like to have MITX Up hackers work on creating ways we can do a better job capturing people’s imagination and telling our story to the world. It should motivate people to want to work and live here. It should help catalyze new businesses and existing business to open here. And it should encourage students to truly believe that Boston is the place to be post-graduation.

There are many constituencies that care about this message and lots of different kinds of channels to use it – it needs to hold up in all. It can come in the form of a tagline, a visual, a video, a rap song or all of the above, really anything that conveys our best assets and the possibilities that are here. It also has to be easy to say and understand. We’d also love ideas about how and where to communicate this.

We use “Boston” to stand for the entire region of eastern Massachusetts since we know that globally that’s how most people identify it.

We want to hear any and all ideas.

Teams will consist of 5-6 local marketing experts from different disciplines. Representatives from the city and the state will be there to help brief you. Like a regular MITX Up hackathon, we’ll break into teams for our 2 hour hack. However, at the end of this one since we all have the same topic, each team will share with everyone else what they think are their best 3 ideas that came out of the hack.

What is MITX Up?

BIMA invites you to "Behind the Upfronts!"

Be part of the discussion and debate; register now!

Every year in the third week of May, the great and the not-so-great gather in New York for the Upfronts. It is a time for the broadcast networks to flirt with the agencies and the clients of broadcast TV.

But offline broadcasting no longer lives on its own. Viewers want to influence TV shows, watch extra content, have real-time dialogue and explore more than just the scheduled broadcast. The “second screen” of a mobile device, laptop or iPad is arguably set to become the first screen in consumers’ homes.

So BIMA ecided to bring this conversation to Boston and provide an opportunity for digital and offline planners and buyers to be part of the discussion, to hear the views of branded content experts and to ask questions of the broadcasters and creators of the best 2012 content.

BIMA’s "Behind The Upfronts" will cover:

  • The most powerful web properties and integrations available in 2012
  • How The ‘Second Screen’ is turning into ‘The First Screen’
  • Where analytics can close the loop for on and offline content

For consumers, brand interaction on social media platforms is no longer the exception – it’s the expectation. People value social media dialogue and use it to form friendly and meaningful relationships with companies. However, despite the tremendous and continual growth of social media and consumer engagement online, marketers often find themselves asking a familiar question: how can I get a more engaged, targeted audience to join the online conversation around my brand?

Utilizing paid and organic search marketing techniques can give marketing professionals the edge they need to dramatically increase the audience, reach, and overall engagement of their social media channels.

In this interactive webinar, Francis Skipper, VP of Digital Marketing at 451 Marketing, will teach attendees how to integrate search marketing tactics into their overall marketing mix to expand their online following, enhance their search rankings, and, ultimately, increase online visibility among their target audiences. Industry statistics, step-by-step instructions, and case studies will leave attendees with the tools necessary to drive social interactions by leveraging search marketing.

With more than 11 years of experience in global digital marketing including search engine marketing, advertising, and sales, Francis Skipper serves as the Vice President of Digital Marketing at 451 Marketing. The Mobile Future

We are well beyond anointing 2014 as yet another "Year of Mobile." Mobile is firmly entrenched in our work and everyday lives - and it's no longer about what handheld device we use, it is now a mindset and a way of life.

The change from mobile as device to mobile as a behavior changes the game for marketers. Combined with the fact that smartphones and tablets have become deeply ingrained in our daily lives and mobile internet browsing is on the cusp of surpassing desktop consumption, the idea of engaging your audience anywhere and everywhere is now playing an integral role in shaping product and marketing plans.

This year's mobile summit will explore the various challenges and implications of these developments for marketers. You'll hear examples of the creative and innovative tactics marketers are using to successfully ride the wave of mobile. We'll focus on areas such as responsiveness, mobile media, context, mobile payments and more with an eye towards the future as mobile technology continues to evolve through the increased adoption of wearables, location-based services & other innovations.

Moderator:

Jack Fellers, Director of Technology & Creative Consulting, Hollister Staffing

Jack has lived and breathed and is an expert in what drives talent in and out, and crazy, in their pursuit of eternal happiness and fulfillment. He's a "Bo-Xer" who is literally in the middle of it all—traditionalists and boomers on the left and Xers and Millennials on the right. Jack studied the fine arts at SUNY Purchase and is an accomplished musician, born and bred in NYC where he developed his passion for facilitating the harmonious integration of great talent with great organizations.

She has often been described by many as "The heart of the company". But don't let the warm and fuzzies fool you, she tells it like it is and isn't afraid of making tough decisions for the company and for her people. She describes herself as sarcastic, honest, trustworthy and maybe even a little bit of a firecracker. Not in any particular order of course.

He began his career in sports marketing, working for such brands as the New Jersey Nets, the NBA league office and Sports Illustrated. When not focused on what’s next in digital, Dave is at home with his wife, 3 sons and two dogs trying to stay in the present. He can be found on Twitter at @CutlerDave.

<![CDATA[Making Responsive Websites Fast Webcast]]>Event Date: 06/03/1989
Time: 12:00pm - 01:00pm
Location: From the comfort of your own desk!
Event Type: Supported Event
Presented by: Guy Podjarny
Duration: Approximately 60 minutes.

Responsive Web Design is quickly becoming the standard way any organization should tackle the post-iPhone web. The client-side approach it embraces makes adapting to the current device easy—and makes it just as easy to make your site painfully slow. Mistakes such as downloading hidden or oversized images, triggering unnecessary scripts, and building massive page sections (only to have them hidden) plague RWD implementations across the Web.

However, being responsive DOES NOT mean being slow. In this webcast, we'll review the most common performance pitfalls and show how you can avoid falling into them, keeping your responsive site snappy and fun. We'll discuss how to combine a smart front-end and a smart server, and offer practical advice on how and when to use each one. Finally, we'll mention some of the standardization efforts underway to help make this work easier in the future.

About Guy Podjarny

Guy Podjarny (Guypo) is a web performance researcher/evangelist and Akamai's Web CTO, focusing primarily on mobile and front-end performance. As a researcher, Guy frequently runs large-scale tests, exploring performance in the real world and matching it to how browsers behave, and was one of the first to highlight the performance implications of Responsive Web Design. Guy is the author of Responsive & Fast: Implementing High-Performance Responsive Design, coming from O'Reilly and Akamai in late June 2014.

Guy is also the creator of Mobitest, a free mobile measurement tool, and contributes to various open source tools. Guy was previously the cofounder and CTO of blaze.io, acquired by Akamai in 2012.]]>

Location: From the comfort of your own desk!
Event Type: Supported Event
Would you like to see your brand climb organic search rankings? We thought so. That is why our very own Dan Cristo will be holding his latest Patent Watch webinar on Panda.

This Google algorithm aims to decrease the ranking of “low-quality” websites so that “high-quality” websites can propel to the top of search results. The Panda algorithm does this by adjusting rankings based on various site factors that will be covered in detail throughout the webinar.

As an attendee, you will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the impacts of Google’s new filter as well as get tips on how your website can ascend to the top of the search results.

Below is just some of the material that will be covered:
  • Familiarity with terms such as:
    • Resources
    • Resource groups
    • Independent links
    • Implied links
    • Reference queries
  • What Google’s search-ranking system looks like for both pre- and post-Panda?
  • What the Panda modification factor entails?
  • What searches get the Panda modifier?
  • Why content farms were hit?
  • What you need to focus on so your website will not suffer?
Dan Cristo, Director of SEO Innovation for Catalyst, has more than 12 years of experience in this industry and has been an SEO Strategy leader for premier brands such as Novartis, Century21, Audi, Pfizer and many more. Dan holds quarterly webinars that analyze and interpret patents of internet giants like Google, Microsoft and Facebook. Previous webinars include:
  • Page Speed
  • Hummingbird
  • AdHeat Advertising (Paid)
  • Social Search (Google+)
  • Personalized Search (organic)
  • Freshness algorithm (organic)

Time: 06:00pm - 08:00pm
Location: District Hall
75 Northern Avenue
Boston, MA
Event Type: Supported Event

Effective networking is one of the strongest tools in any entrepreneur's toolbox, as it allows you to create and strengthen relationships that can help grow your idea into a successful business. In-person networking is also an art that is oftentimes considered a superficial frill of the days before email and text messages. Because of this, very few of us were ever taught how to network effectively, and many people find it to be a painful ordeal. In the hopes of making networking both effective and painless, Foley Hoag and mosaicHub have partnered with District Hall to focus our next Women in Entrepreneurship session on Painless Networking Tools for Women Entrepreneurs.

The first part of our event will be a presentation by Jodi R.R. Smith, President of Mannersmith. During this time, you will learn how to handle business situations, from conferences to cocktail parties, with poise and confidence. Topics to be covered include:

  • What to know before you go
  • Nametag placement
  • Handshakes: Lessons from the Goldilocks
  • Introductions: What they say about you
  • Body Language: What you are really saying
  • Conversation: business vs. social
  • Connecting with clients and customers
  • Building business relationships

The second part of the session will be an interactive cocktail reception where you will be able to practice what you have learned and ask Jodi any questions that you might have.

We hope that you will be able to join us for this session.
