Telling Bostons Innovation Economy Story
A MITX Up Marketing Hackathon
 
Boston is one of the worlds most innovative cities. Yet to date we havent been able to capture the story and the utter awesomeness of our innovation economy in a way thats succinct, compelling and exciting.
 
Wed like to have MITX Up hackers work on creating ways we can do a better job capturing peoples imagination and telling our story to the world. It should motivate people to want to work and live here. It should help catalyze new businesses and existing business to open here. And it should encourage students to truly believe that Boston is the place to be post-graduation.
 
There are many constituencies that care about this message and lots of different kinds of channels to use it it needs to hold up in all. It can come in the form of a tagline, a visual, a video, a rap song or all of the above, really anything that conveys our best assets and the possibilities that are here. It also has to be easy to say and understand. Wed also love ideas about how and where to communicate this.
 
We use Boston to stand for the entire region of eastern Massachusetts since we know that globally thats how most people identify it.
 
We want to hear any and all ideas.
 
Teams will consist of 5-6 local marketing experts from different disciplines. Representatives from the city and the state will be there to help brief you.  Like a regular MITX Up hackathon, well break into teams for our 2 hour hack. However, at the end of this one since we all have the same topic, each team will share with everyone else what they think are their best 3 ideas that came out of the hack.

What is MITX Up?

Under Prats direction, the Staples mobile team has recently launched several assets including a mobile website, smart phone applications and a tablet site.

Prat has over 15 years of experience leading mobile and online innovation as well as product development efforts for companies in the healthcare, finance, insurance and defense industries. He is passionate about online and e-commerce innovations and interested in learning more about cutting edge interactive and mobile technologies. Prat earned a Masters in Business Administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technologys Sloan School of Management and a Bachelors degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Madras.

Dusan Koljensic
Experience Design Director & Practice Lead, SapientNitro

Dusan leads the SapientNitro Boston Experience Design practice. His group provides customer-centric, research and strategy-driven multi-channel information architecture and experience design services across a variety of projects ranging from portals and on-line applications to e-commerce and brand-driven solutions. Dusan (although a long time Boston resident) joined Sapient in London 5 years ago. While there, he worked on projects for City of London Telecom, Vodafone, Times of London and Sky Entertainment among others. He missed Bostons weather so much, he moved back 3 years ago and has since been leading a variety of projects for large Fortune 500 clients as well as the experience design group. Under his leadership, the team expanded from a handful to one of the largest and most vibrant experience design groups in New England.

Before Sapient, Dusan was a founder and UX Director at ArtMediaLab working with major publishing companies such as Pearson, Thomson Brooks Cole and Addison Wesley. While running his company, he was an Assistant Professor at Massachusetts College of Art where he helped create curriculum for undergraduate and graduate web design and information architecture classes.

Dusans education spans a number of disciplines covering all aspects of web design: In his home country of Serbia, he graduated from a high school specializing in sciences and computer programming. In the USA, he holds a BFA in Graphic Design, and a Masters in Dynamic Media.

Trained as a jazz pianist, his musical background spans such genres as: rock, blues, jazz and classical music.

Tim received his B.A. from Stanford University, where he studied computer acoustics and recording technology. For the past 8 years, Patrick served as Co-founder and CTO of Nimbit, one of the leading direct-to-fan platforms for the music industry, powering fan marketing and e-commerce solutions for 50,000 artists and labels at every level. Nimbit was acquired by PreSonus Audio Electronics in April 2013 and recently Mr. Faucher has taken up a new post as CIO at PreSonus, which provides integrated hardware and software solutions for content creation, recording, mixing and marketing and distribution. He is currently working on their global data strategy. Patrick is a graduate of Bostons Berklee College of Music and has studied computer science as well as electrical engineering. Teams will develop an idea that uses technology and innovation as a platform to make a significant impact in the Boston community. This idea will then be delivered in a five minute pitching competition at the end of the event.

Students will have access to members of the MITX Future Leaders Group during the entire event in order to receive expert mentorship valuable to the growth of their ideas.

General Judging Rubric:

Students will be judged by executive members of Boston & Cambridge area businesses, many of whom sit on the MITX Board. These judges will act as potential "investors" of the business pitches, providing students with real-world experience in receiving buy-in for a product or service idea.

Speakers:

Young professionals from the MITX Future Leaders Group will provide short presentations throughout the course of the event to help guide teams as they build their business. These leaders come from organizations such as Google, PLASTIQ, HubSpot, Wayfair, EverTrue, TUGG, Hill Holiday, Digitas, and Constant Contact.

At the heart of accelerating in the digital age is the actual building of digital products. So, what do you need to know about the nuts and bolts? This hands on workshop is intended to position internet literate, non-programmers to communicate and work more effectively with developers. Through this interactive workshop, you will leave with the fundamentals of web development and a new way to make meaning of the internet.
  • Understand the steps of the web development process and the problems for which they solve
  • Describe the core differences between front-end and back-end languages and the components that go into each one
  • Learn the basics: how to demo, read and update simple examples of code

Kevin Mitchell is a software engineer with nearly a decade of experience in both server and client-side web development. His work has been primarily in the financial services industry, with clients including Morgan Stanley, Bloomberg, Citi, and BoNY-Mellon. He also is the lead volunteer for ScriptEd, a non-profit which teaches after-school computer science classes in underserved schools, and has been honored as a Champion of Change for Tech Inclusion by the White House.

The Mobile Future

We are well beyond anointing 2014 as yet another "Year of Mobile." Mobile is firmly entrenched in our work and everyday lives - and it's no longer about what handheld device we use, it is now a mindset and a way of life.
